When winter is at its worst, the last thing you need is a home that’s as cold and unwelcoming as the outdoors. That’s why it’s important to decorate your home for the season. You don’t have to remodel your home every time winter comes around. In fact, just a few extra touches can make all the difference between a dull, dreary home to one that’s cozy and comfortable. Here are some winter decorating tips to help you get started.

Use warm colors. You may have heard of “warm” and “cold” areas in the color spectrum. In the winter, it makes sense to use warm colors such as red, yellow, orange, and brown. These colors remind you of warmer seasons. Used in the right combinations, they can create a beautiful summery theme–you can easily forget that it’s winter outside!

Create cozy spaces. People tend to huddle together in cold weather to keep warm. This habit is easily adapted to the home by creating intimate spaces where everyone can sit together and enjoy the company. Simply place your living room furniture in a smaller area, preferably facing each other in a circle. It also makes a nice conversational space when you have friends or family over.

Put soft surfaces all over. When you want to warm up, nothing beats sinking into soft, comfy furniture as soon as you get home. Make sure there’s always something to plop down into whenever you feel like it. One way to do that is with winter area rugs. Put an area rug on your floor and you’ve got a nice sitting area, as well as a stylish focal point for the room.

Make good use of natural light. If you have a large window, don’t cover it up–pull up the blinds and let natural light spill into the room. Sunlight is one of the most effective ways to warm up, so get as much of it as you can. Make the most of your window by putting up mirrors that bounce the light around the room. Not only does it make a cozy effect, it also saves you money in light and heating.
